Identity:

Max Beerbohm was a painter, designer, cartoonist and writer.

Life:

He was the drama critic for the Saturday Review from 1898 until 1910. He was a prolific writer and essayist.

Published caricatures, including Fifty Caricatures (1913) and Rossetti and His Circle (1922) include witty images of Whistler and other artists and writers. Blue China, published in 1922, for instance, shows a diminutive Whistler extolling a blue asian vase to the historian Thomas Carlyle. Collections of his caricatures are in several collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum.
