William Allan Coats was the fourth son of Thomas Coats of Ferguslic and a director of J. & P. Coats, a thread manufacturing company based in Pasiley, Scotland.

Life:

Catalogue of the Collection of Pictures of the French, Dutch, British and other schools belonging to W.A. Coats, and written by himsef, was published by the art dealer W. B. Paterson, Glasgow, 1904.

He owned Sketch for 'Nocturne in Blue and Gold: Valparaiso Bay' y074. After his death his collection was sold by W. B. Paterson.
