Mathias Morhardt was a writer and critic and the editor of Le Temps.

Life:

Morhardt promoted the work of Rodin and Zola and supported the cause of Alfred Dreyfus, the army officer wrongfully accused of selling military secrets to the Germans. Morhardt eventually became Secretary General of the Ligue des Droits de l'Homme. He also wrote a play L'Esprit Nouveau (1905), books on the origins of the First World War, Les Preuves. Le Crime du droit commun, le Crime diplomatique (1924) and C'est l'Angleterre qui a voulu la guerre... (1926) and A la rencontre de William Shakespeare..., which argued that Shakespeare's plays were written by William Stanley, 6th Earl of Derby (1938).
