Joshua Montgomery Sears was the son of Phebe and Joshua Sears.
A wealthy real estate magnate, in 1877 he married the artist, collector and art patron, Sarah Carlile Choate (1858-1935). They were patrons of the arts in Boston. She was painted by J.S. Sargent (Museum of Fine Arts, Houston). Their son, born in 1879, was also named Joshua Montgomery Sears; their daughter Helen was born ten years later..
He made several trips to the UK. One was in 1896, when he bought Chelsea Houses y290. He then boughtMarine: Blue and Grey y410 in 1898, both from the Goupil Gallery, London.
