Thomas Sutherland was a lawyer and MP.

Life:

Sutherland was a Liberal (later Liberal Unionist) MP for Greenock. He worked for many years for the P. and O. Line (then known as the Peninsular and Oriental Line), spending time in China and Hong Kong where he was one of the founders of the Hong Kong Docks and the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank. He was Chairman of the P. and O. line from 1881-1914.

He was a friend and patron to Whistler in the 1870s, and subscrined to a set of Venice etchings (#13071).
