Detail from The Canal, Amsterdam, 1889, James McNeill Whistler, The Hunterian, University of Glasgow

Note in Red: The Siesta

Note in Red: The Siesta dates from between 1883 and 1884, and was exhibited in 1884. 1

According to art dealers' records, it was a portrait of Maud Franklin (1857-ca 1941) painted about 1882/1883. The signature suggests a marginally later date of 1883/1884. It was known to the compilers of the 1980 catalogue raisonné only from a photograph, but has been seen since it was acquired by the Terra Foundation for American Art.
