It is likely that the drawing was touched up by another hand, probably that of his brother-in-law, Francis Seymour Haden, Sr (1818-1910).
History
Provenance
- Date unknown: given by the artist or his mother Anna Matilda Whistler (1804-1881) to his half-sister Deborah Delano Haden (1825-1908);
- 1898: bought from her husband, Francis Seymour Haden, Sr (1818-1910) through Wunderlich's, New York art dealers, by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919);
- 1919: bequeathed to the Freer Gallery of Art.

It was not exhibited in Whistler's lifetime, as far as is known.
