Description

A caricature of Rev. Dr Park, who was 'very tall and thin, with a long neck and a collar so high and stiff that he couldn't turn his head'. 1

Sitter

Roswell Park (1807-1869) graduated from West Point Military Academy in the class of 1831, and was, like Whistler's father, an engineer. He resigned in 1836 and taught at the University of Pennsylvania, before going into the ministry of the Protestant Episcopal church. He was Principal of Christ Church preparatory school in Pomfret (1845-1852) when Whistler was there, but left to become President, and later Chancellor, of Racine College.
