Subject

Description

These apparently included studies of cadets at the United States Military Academy, West Point. Other subjects were taken from the novels of Victor Marie Hugo (1802-1885) or Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870). Loomis Lyman Langdon (1830-1910) recorded that 'The Three Guardsmen' (presumably meaning The Three Musketeers) as a favourite of Whistler and a fellow cadet, Frances Laurens Vinton (1835-1879). 1
