Drawing stands for many life drawings and academic studies, now missing, which date from after November 1855 when Whistler registered for life classes at the Ecole Impériale et Spéciale de Dessin in Paris, into the following year and possibly in 1857, when his mother wrote to him 'You do not mention your course of instruction at the Academies. I hope you do more than copy'. 1
