Conservation History
Over fifty drawings, many in sketchbooks, most of which dated from 1857-1858, were apparemtly given to Whistler's half-sister Deborah and/or her husband, Francis Seymour Haden, and were later removed from the sketchbooks.
History
Provenance
- ca 1858: given to Whistler's half-sister Deborah Delano Haden (1825-1908) and/or her husband, Francis Seymour Haden, Sr (1818-1910);
- 1890/1891: Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) and Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) of Detroit learnt that Haden's collection of Whistler etchings and drawings was available, and discussed dividing it between themselves;
- ca 1895: Freer discussed the collection with E. G. Kennedy, of the New York firm of Wunderlich's, and learnt that MrsWunderlich would not agree 'to sell the Whistlers in a single lot';
- 1898: Thomas Wilmer Dewing (1851-1938) acted as go-between in negotiations between Freer and Wunderlich's to purchase of the Haden collection, which was accomplished in November 1898;
- 1919: bequeathed Freer to the Freer Gallery of Art.

Exhibitions
It was not exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
Due to the conditions of Freer's will, it cannot be lent to another venue.
