The woman is Joanna Hiffernan (b. ca 1843-d.1886); the young man has not been identified.

The drawing is only known from the wood engraving. The flowing lines of the dress are probably careful copies of the drawing but the shading on the faces is less likely to be exact: it reflects the wood engraver's techniques for suggesting shading.
There is no further record of it.
The drawing was not exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
