- 1877/1880s: acquired by Henry Graves (1806-1892), of H. Graves & Co., art dealer and publisher, London;
- 1893: sold at auction after his death, at Christie's, London, 20 April 1893 (lot 122) as 'A Sketch for Balcony', and possibly bought by 'Parsons' for £3.10.0.

It was not exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
