This appears to be the left side of an incomplete figure composition. The butterfly signature was added later, 1879/1881. A woman listening to a musician m0328 may also have been part of this composition.

Provenance
- 1930: sold at auction, Sotheby's, London, 3 June 1930 (lot 249) bought by Colnaghi's, London art dealers;
- 1930: sold to Harold K. Hochschild (1892-1981), New York;
- 1940: given to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in May 1940.
The early history of this drawing is not known.
