The butterfly signature suggests that the drawing might have been signed for exhibition at Mr Whistler's Exhibition, Flemish Gallery, 48 Pall Mall, London, 1874, but if so, it has not been identified with known works at that show. The note, 'Paris', suggests it might have been planned for exhibition but no such exhibition has been identified.
By the terms of Miss Birnie Philip's gift to the University, the drawing can not be lent to other venues.
