It was exhibited in 1903-1904 as 'La Japonaise', which implied that the model carried a fan or parasol. It was described as 'a little study of the nude in sanguine.' 1

It was described as being in 'sanguine', which was not usual in Whistler's work, but not unknown. However, it could possibly have been a drawing on brown paper done with a combination of black and brown chalks.
