• 1870s: acquired by Whistler's lithographer, Thomas Way (1837-1915);
• 1905: sold by his son, Thomas Robert Way (1861-1913), to Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919), June 1905;
• 1919: bequeathed to the Freer Gallery of Art.
