Provenance

• 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death and bequeathed to his sister-in-law and executrix, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958);
• 1935: given by Miss Birnie Philip to the University of Glasgow.

Exhibitions

• 1874: Mr Whistler's Exhibition, Flemish Gallery, 48 Pall Mall, London, 1874 (cat. no. 11) as 'The Dressmaker'.

Due to the conditions of Miss Birnie Philip's gift to the University of Glasgow, the drawing can not be exhibited elsewhere.
