An inscription in unknown hand on paper stuck to the back of the frame reads: 'A portrait of Mrs Isabel Marion Galsworthy wife of Frederick Thomas Galsworthy sketched on brown paper by J.McNeil Whistler (1834-1903) casually one day after luncheon at her house No.8 Queens Gate, London, S.W. in the year 1877.' However, the signature suggests an earlier date.
The drawing is fully catalogued in MacDonald 1995 (cat. rais.) [more] (cat. no. 540).

Provenance
- 1870s: given to the sitter, Isabel Marion Galsworthy (1841-1903) and passed to her husband, Frederick Thomas Galsworthy (1827-1917);
- 1917: passed by family descent to the sitter's grandson, Peter Ker Pinching (1889-1948), who took the name Galsworthy, becoming Captain Peter Galsworthy of the Royal Fusiliers, Draycott Place, Chelsea;
- 1948: bequeathed to his cousin, Diana C. J. Reid (Mrs Roderick C. G. Macleod).
Exhibitions
It was not, as far as is known, exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
