These lively fish recall the Manga of Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) as well as the fish etched by Joseph Auguste Bracquemond (1813-1914) in 1866-67 for the Rousseau plates (Béraldi 553).

Provenance
- 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death and bequeathed to his sister-in-law and executrix, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958);
- 1935: given by Miss Birnie Philip to the University of Glasgow.
