
Studies of blue and white porcelain probably dates from 1876. It was painted for Murray Marks (1840-1918) to show how Whistler would illustrate a proposed catalogue of the collection of Henry Thompson (1820-1894). 1

In 1906, while owned by Murray Marks, it was photographed by William E. Gray for Joseph Pennell (1860-1926). 2
It was not, as far as is known, exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
