This is a drawing of Arrangement in Brown and Black: Portrait of Miss Rosa Corder y203.

This is a sketch of Harmony in Yellow and Gold: The Gold Girl - Connie Gilchrist y190. The Pennells wrote that 'in friends' houses, he would make little sketches of pictures he was working on, and one evening he left with Mr. Cole [a sketch of] ... the Rosa Corder.' ¹

Conservation History

Connie Gilchrist m0712 appears to be the left half of a sheet of writing paper, and Study of 'Arrangement in Brown and Black: Miss Rosa Corder' m0713, the right half.

History

Provenance

• ca 1879: probably given by Whistler to Alan Summerly Cole (1846-1934), London;
• 1891: on 9 June Edward Guthrie Kennedy (1849-1932), New York dealer, brought 11 drawings, probably including this, to Paris for Whistler to sign; ²
• Date unknown: acquired by George Aloysius Lucas (1824-1909), Baltimore;
• 1909: bequeathed to Baltimore Museum of Art.
