The Scuola di San Giovanni Evangelista is on the Calle della Laca, north of San Rocco and the Frari, at the centre of an area of Venice encircled to west of the Grand Canal. It is one of the five great Scuole, a meeting and prayer house for one of the confraternities into which Venetians banded together, bound by common origins or occupations, for mutual and charitable benefit. The exterior is exquisite, with intricate carving and iron-work, a masterpiece of the Venetian Renaissance. 1
