It is only known to the authors only from a reproduction. It is not totally consistent with Whistler's work. It is possible, however, that it was in need of repair and was worked on by Thomas Robert Way (1861-1913).

There appear to be some pentimenti, and the dome of church was originally higher up.

• 1916: sold at auction, Sotheby's, London, 25 July 1916 (lot 78) as 'Santa Maria della Salute, Venice' and bought by Agnew's, London dealers;
• 1916: sold on 29 July to Charles W. Kraushaar (1854-1917).
• By 1947: 'Salute – Gondoliers' bought by Macbeth, New York dealers;
• 1948/1949: sold to Albert Kinkade Chapman (1890-1984), Allens Creek Road, Rochester, New York.
