Very free washes indicate sea, sky and hills; details of the greys and browns of the town roofs were painted with a pointed brush, the colours frequently running into each other.

Conservation History

The paper is slightly darkened.

• 1911: possibly consigned by Obach & Co., to be sold at auction, Christie's, London, 21 July 1911 (lot 80), bought by 'Baines' or 'Barnes';
• 1912: with Colnaghi's, art dealers, London.
• Before 1953: Hastings m0830 and Hastings from the cliffs m0831 were acquired by George Edward Healing (1871-1953), 54 Richmond Road, Surrey, UK.
• Before 1967: both were later acquired by Sir Hugh Eyre Campbell Beaver, KBE (1890-1967), Luxford, Crowborough, Sussex, UK.
• Before 1868: A. F. Wallis, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, England;
• 1968: sold at auction, Christie's, London, 19 July 1968 (lot 31) bought by Leadbeater;
• 1968: sold through the Schweitzer Gallery, New York, to a private collector.
• Date unknown: with the Cavalier Galleries, New York.
• Date unknown: bought from the Schweitzer Gallery, New York, by a private collector;
• 2018: sold at auction, Christie's, New York, 14-20 November 2018 (lot164) for $32,500.
