The town of Hastings on the English coast. An inscription written in an unknown hand on the verso reads 'The view is from near Minnis Rock just above the London Road.'

Hastings m0830, Hastings from the cliffs m0831, and Hastings: fishing boats m0832 are similar in technique, with broad areas of washes, and small areas of fine detail.

History

Provenance

• 1908: with Obach, London dealers, and sent to Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919), Detroit, on 13 October, but returned on 31 December;
• 1911: possibly consigned by Obach & Co., to be sold at auction, Christie's, London, 21 July 1911 (lot 81) as 'Hastings from the cliffs' and bought by George Edward Healing (1871-1953), 54 Richmond Road, Surrey, UK.;
• 1953: after his death, sold at auction, Sotheby's, London, 18 November 1953 (lot 65) as 'View of Hastings' and bought by J. Leger, London dealers.
• Before 1967: acquired by Sir Hugh Eyre Campbell Beaver, KBE (1890-1967), Luxford, Crowborough, Sussex.
• 1970: with the property of Mrs C. Lawson Tancred, sold at auction, Sotheby's, London, 22 April 1970 (lot 205) as 'Hastings No.1' and bought by Williams & Son, London dealers.
• By 1974: owned by Ira Spanierman (n/a), New York dealer;
• 1974: at auction, Sotheby Parke-Bernet, New York, 23 May 1974 (lot 41F, repr.) as 'View of Hastings', bought in.
• Before 1984: bought by Gilbert Waters (n/a), Sarasota, Florida;
• 1986: sold through Knoedler's, New York dealers, to a private collector.
• 1995: with Hope Davis, art dealer, New York.
• 2013: given by Paula Crane Lunder (b. 1935) and Peter H. Lunder (b. 1933) to Colby College Museum of Art.
