Provenance

• 1886: possibly bought by Henry Irving (1838-1905), London.
• By 1905: owned by Ada Maud Jarvis (1850-1919), until at least 1911.
• 1942: 'Sailing Boats' deposited by Mrs J. W. Simpson, of Simpson, Thacker and Bartlett, with Knoedler, New York dealers, from 3-15 June 1942 (#CAl928).
• Date unknown: bought from a collector in Southampton, England, by a private collector in the USA, and passed by family descent to a collector in Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island;
• Before 1984: sold to Gilbert Waters (d. 2018) in Sarasota, Florida;
• 1989: sold through Hope Davis, New York art dealer, to a private collector, Los Angeles.
