A beach in the Netherlands, possibly Scheveningen. Whistler may have visited that busy fisging town on the recommendation of Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831-1915). ¹

Provenance

• 1889: sold in April through Wunderlich, New York dealer, to Henry Osbourne Havemeyer (1847-1907), New York;
• 1907: bequeathed to his widow, Louisine Waldron Havemeyer (1855-1929)
• 1929-1963: owned by her daughter, Adaline Havenemeyer Frelinghuysen (1884-1963), Morristown, NJ;
• 1963: passed by family descent to a private collector.
