This drawing of Arrangement in Black: Portrait of Señor Pablo de Sarasate y315 was made when the oil was shown at The sixty-second Annual Exhibition, Society of British Artists, London, 1885. It was made for reproduction in an article by Robert Goodloe Harper Pennington (1854 or 1855-d. 1920). ¹

History

Provenance

• 1885: possibly acquired by Robert Goodloe Harper Pennington (1854 or 1855-d. 1920) for his article on Whistler in the Pall Mall Gazette, or acquired by the editor of that magazine, Charles Morley (1853-1916).
• Date unknown: possibly with the art dealer Gustav Nebehay (1881-1935), Berlin (photograph in Witt Collection, Courtauld Institute, London).
• 1943: bequeathed by Grenville Lindell Winthrop (1864-1943) to the Fogg Art Museum.

Exhibitions
