Provenance

• 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death and bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958);
• 1935: given by Miss Philip to the University of Glasgow.

• 1887: Possibly Exposition Internationale de Peinture et de Sculpture, Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, 1887 (cat. no. 191) as 'Vert et orange: Paris' although that could have been an oil.
• 1888: III. Internationale Kunst-Ausstellung, Königlicher Glaspalast, Munich, 1888 (cat. no. 31) as 'Grun und orange: Paris'.
• 1889: “Notes” – “Harmonies” – “Nocturnes”, H. Wunderlich & Co., New York, 1889 (cat. no. 22) as 'An Orange Note – Booth's, Paris'.
• 1905: Œuvres de James McNeill Whistler, Palais de l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris, 1905 (cat. no. 98) as 'Chelsea Shops'.

It was described in The Sun, New York, 10 March 1889, as 'street booths in Paris, with a bright touch of orange as the key-note'.

It was priced at 35 guineas, but remained unsold, and was returned to Whistler after the exhibition by Wunderlich's on the SS Servia. ¹
