Plan of rooms was drawn on the verso of a letter from Robert Koehler (1850-1917) to Whistler, dated 17 April 1888, regarding III. Internationale Kunst-Ausstellung, Königlicher Glaspalast, Munich, 1888. ¹ He asked how much wall space Whistler's exhibits would require.

Koehler's letter is on the first and third sides, and the rough sketch on the fourth side. It is impossible to tell if it is by Whistler or if it has anything to do with his exhibits.

Conservation History

There are holes at the top for filing the letter. The paper is grubby.

Provenance

• 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death in 1903 and bequeathed to his sister-in-law, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958);
• 1955: given by Miss Birnie Philip to the University of Glasgow.

Exhibitions

Although the sketch may concern an exhibition, it was never exhibited.
