Given the title A Pink Note this was almost certainly a study of a nude or partially draped woman.
New York Evening Post, 6 March 1889, wrote, describing a drawing, possibly this one: 'Imagine a piece of coarse brown paper with a badly drawn outline traced upon it, a very little white chalk scratched over the background, and you have one of Mr. Whistler's "Pink Notes".'

It was priced at 40 guineas in 1889, but remained unsold, and was returned to Whistler after the exhibition by Wunderlich's on the SS Servia. 1
