The Terrace, Luxembourg was drawn on the back of a letter from David Croal Thomson (1855-1930) to Whistler dated 25 March 1892. ¹ The letter is not related to the drawing.

The drawing shows figures standing on one of the terraces in the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris. It is a similar scene to that shown in the lithographs The Pantheon, from the terrace of the Luxembourg Gardens c070 and The Terrace, Luxembourg c087, which were sent to Thomas Way (1837-1915) for transfer on 15 November 1893 and 19 July 1894 respectively.

The drawing is upside down on the fourth side of the letter. It is rubbed and faint.

History

Provenance

• 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death in 1903 and bequeathed to his sister-in-law, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958);
• 1955: given by Miss Birnie Philip to the University of Glasgow.
