This is a copy by Whistler of Nocturne: Black and Gold - The Fire Wheel y169. It shows the original state of the painting clearly, the actual oil painting having darkened.

Conservation History

The paper has a very slight horizontal grain. The edges were unevenly trimmed. The paint has darkened and oxidised a little, and the paper has browned.

History

Provenance

• 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death in 1903 and bequeathed to his sister-in-law, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958);
• 1958: bequeathed by Miss Birnie Philip to the University of Glasgow.

Exhibitions

It was not, as far as is known, exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
