Partly drawn in Brittany, France. After 4 July 1893, Whistler and his wife Beatrice visited Vitré, Lannion and Paimpol for a few days, and each carried notebooks to record accounts, notes and scenes.

The drawings are rather like those of Beatrice Philip (Mrs E. W. Godwin, Mrs J. McN. Whistler) (1857-1896) but the writing is Whistler's and it is assumed the drawings are by him.
