Bits of charcoal were rubbed to achieve a blurred effect, accentuating the flickering silvery lines.
The paper is a dull grey-brown, fibrous, with small fragments of wood-stalk in it, and a rough vertical grain.
As far as is known, it was not exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
