It was drawn in charcoal. Whistler's smudging of pastel was marred by the large bits of wood to left of her head and at her knee. His tentative drawing was further blurred by the rubbing.

A girl in a red cap m1468 and A girl in a green cap and white tunic m1469 are similar in colour, technique and paper.
