The sketch was originally laid down on a board with another work on the verso but they were separated in 1980/1981; see A study of trees m1617

- 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death, and bequeathed to his ward and executrix, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) ;
- 1943: bought by Colnaghi's, London art dealers, 28 July, and sold to Count Hatvany;
- 1980: sold at auction, Christie's, London, 13 June 1980 (lot 12);
- 1981: bought by Dr John Larkin (n/a);
- 1981: sold through Hope Davis, New York art dealer, to Paul Mellon (1907-1999);
- 1993: given to Yale Center for British Art, New Haven.
