• 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death, and bequeathed to his ward and executrix, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) ;
• 1955: sold by Miss R. Birnie Philip to Colnaghi's, London art dealers, 25 June 1955;
• 1956: sold on 3 March to Carl Robert Rudolf (ca 1884-1974), London
• 1983: sold at auction, Christie's, London, 4 March 1983 (lot 29, repr.) as 'Ronald Philip reading on a Chair';
• 1984: bought from A. Reed, London dealer, by Knoedler's, New York dealers, 14 May;
• 1985: bought on 22 November by Jill Newhouse, New York dealer;
• By 1995: sold to a private collector.
