Provenance
- 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death, and bequeathed to his ward and executrix, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) ;
- 1955: sold on 25 June to Colnaghi's, London art dealers;
- 1956: bought by Alister Mathews (1907-1985), art dealer, Bournemouth;
- 1957: bought by the Library of Congress.

It was not exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
