Dordrecht dates from the summer of 1902, when Whistler was convalescing at the Hague, and, according to the artist Carel Nicolaas Storm van 's Gravesande (1841-1924), they both did some drawings in Dordrecht. 1

'J’ai passé quelque jours avec lui à Dordrecht, nous y avons fait des croquis […] On ne peut pas s’imaginer un compagnon plus gentil que lui, enjoué, aimable, sans aucune prétention, enthusiaste, et avec cela travailleur comme pas un.' 2
Translated: ' 'I spent a few days with him in Dordrecht, we did some sketches there ... You can not imagine a companion more kind than him, cheerful, kind, without any pretension, enthusiastic, and with that a worker like none other.'
