A painting of an unidentified subject was mentioned as sold in 1873. On 22 June 1873 Samuel Putnam Avery (1822-1904) recorded a visit to Whistler on which he 'Bought ... painting by W. 40L very amusing time.' 1 On the same day, Whistler drew a Sketch of Maud m0497 and gave it to Avery.
