The title under which it was exhibited in 1885, 'Grey and Brown: A South West Wind', described
the colour but not the subject. 4 .
In Truth on 7 May 1885 this painting and Note in Grey: Holland y299 were described as 'little oil paintings
of yellow seas', while the Illustrated London News, 25 April 1885, described them as
'studies of Dutch scenery'.

The coast of Holland. A south-west wind (as the title describes) would bring long rollers
breaking all along the shore.
