Alphonse Wyatt Thibaudeau

Alphonse Wyatt Thibaudeau (ca 1840 - d.1892) was a print dealer and collector.

Life:

Thibaudeau, a collector of prints and drawings, was originally a publishing scholar. He became a dealer around 1873 or 1874, working largely in Paris and London, where he acquired old master and contemporary drawings and prints. In London he had premises at 18 Green Street, St Martin's Place, behind the National Gallery. He notably sought works by Whistler, and other significant figures in the etching revival including Charles Meryon, Félix Bracquemond, Francis Seymour Haden, Henri Fantin-Latour and Alphonse Legros. In 1877 he published a catalogue raisonné of the work of Legros. He was an important source of information for Wedmore as he compiled his catalogue of Whistler's etchings in 1886. The firm's ledger for 1875-77 is currently housed at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, CA. With Messrs Dowdeswell, he was the publisher of Whistler's second Venice Set in 1886. He also collaborated with the London art dealers Edmund Deprez and Otto Gutekunst and was associated with P. & D. Colnaghi & Co. However, Thibaudeau defaulted on his borrowings in 1889 and fled to America where he died soon after.
