Anthony Frederick Augustus Sandys was a portrait painter and designer. His sister Emma was also a painter.
Life:
Sandys was a painter of mythological subjects and portraits, and also worked as a designer. He was a friend of Whistler's, particularly during the 1860s and an associate of the Pre-Raphaelites. In 1899, he was a member of the Executive Committee of the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers, of which Whistler was president. According to Hartrick, Whistler used to mimic Sandys who was always in trouble about money or women: 'Whistler described him as a magnificent specimen with curled moustaches and the manners of a guardsman in a Ouida novel'. He lived at 21 Wigmore Street; 16 Cheyne Walk until 16 October 1866 and at 19 St Giles' (or Grapes) Hill, Norwich.
