James W. Paton was the Curator of the Glasgow Industrial Museum in 1891; he was Superintendent of Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum (1876–1914).
Paton was one of the recipients of an artists' petition for the Glasgow Coporation to purchase Arrangement in Grey and Black, No. 2: Portrait of Thomas Carlyle y137. He also negotiated with Whistler over the purchase in March and April 1891.
His portrait, by James Henderson, is in Glasgow Museums.
