Charles Hessele

Nationality: French
Category: art dealer

Identity:

Charles Hessele was a print dealer in Paris.

Life:

Hessele was active between 1901 and 1914. He specialised in modern prints, first at 13 rue Laffitte, then 52 rue Laffitte, then 16 rue Balzac. His stock was confiscated as that of an enemy alien in the 1914-18 war and sold in 1919.

He appears to have bought several paintings from Whistler, namely The Girl in Red y312, Chelsea, Little Furniture Shop y373, Green and Gold: A Shop in Calais y474, Violet and Blue: The Red Feather y503, and Blue Sea Piece, Dieppe y525 (GUW #13662). However the sale, recorded by Whistler, may not have been finalised.

He seems also to have been involved in some way in the sale of several works from Whistler's studio by Carmen Rossi in the late 1890s, including possibly Alice Butt (1) y437 and, in 1902, Rose et or: La Napolitaine y505.
