The son of Ralph Randolph Abbott (1847 - 1888) and Susan Young Peterson Abbott (1850 - 1927), he moved to France, where he met and married Maud Franklin, who had been Whistler's model and partner in the 1880s. They lived in a villa near Cannes until her death at the start of the second World War.
He was a car salesman, mechanic and racer. During the war he returned to America. After several years of ill health he committed suicide. He was survived by two sisters, and Maud's daughter Ione Tyler.
