Identity:

James Carfrae Alston was a Glasgow tobacco merchant.

Life:

He was a collector (he is referred to in Whistler's correspondence about 1893). He gave several works to public collections, including, for instance, Monticelli's Garden Fete: The White Horse, given to Kelvingrove Art Gallery in 1909.

Officers of the 1st Lanarkshire Volunteers were among the prime movers in the Council that established The Boys' Brigade in 1885. J. Carfrae Alston, who was also a Major in the 1st Lanarkshire Volunteers, was elected first President of the Council.
