'H. Axenfeld artiste - peintre' is listed in the Registre d'autorisations attribues de copistes. Classement alphabetiques au nom de l'artiste copiée, Louvre. The list of copies made in the Louvre, 'Ecoles Italienne et Espagnole Juin 1851- Novembre 1859' ( LL26) includes 'Henri Oulevay' copying Raphael's Sainte Famille, No. 377 on 12 June 1851 (p. 13) and Titian's Christ au tombeau, No. 46 on 19 November 1855 (p. 98). Whistler probably met Axenfeld about this time, shortly after his arrival in France. In 1860 he made an etching of him, Axenfeld [68].

Axenfeld became a naturalised Frenchman in 1878. Having worked under Leon Cogniet, he exhibited at the Salon 1881-1890 and in London from 1874-1877. He also exhibited a portrait and pochades in the Exposition Internationale de blanc et noir in Paris in 1892.

Axenfeld may well have been the author 'Henri Axenfeld' who published Les Grands Peintres. Ecoles d'Italie ... Les Grands Dessinateurs. Leonardo da Vinci - Michel Ange - Raphael ..., Paris, 1886.
